Ignored Addictions

Ignored Addictions

So many times when we hear the word addiction, we immediately think of someone strung out of drugs or that alcoholic who everyone in the family knows. Believe it or not, there are simply things we do every single day that can fall into the category of addiction. Anything that alters your mood can become addictive. It begins as self-medication to help you manage pain or a void. The question is, are these ignored addictions helpful or harmful?

Below is a list of behavioral addictions that we partake in daily. What else can you add to the list?

  • Social Media
  • Caffeine
  • Shopping
  • Exercise
  • Gambling
  • Smoking
  • Overeating
  • Television Consumption
  • Internet Addiction

If you or anyone you know is looking for assistance with addiction, SAMHSA’s National Helpline is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.
