Self-Protection in Today’s World

Self-Protection in Today’s World

You are your own first responder. Even though the world is a beautiful place, it can also be a dangerous place. Ask yourself this question, if you were attacked while stopping for gas, would you be able to protect or defend yourself? If the answer is no or unsure, it is time to look into some of the self-protection options below.

Knife

Knives are one of the best options for self-protection. If you live in a location that prohibits firearms, you’re not comfortable carrying a firearm, or were denied the ability to carry concealed; a knife may be a good alternative. There are so many options when it comes to knives. When using a knife, you must be close to someone. This comes in handy if you are being attacked. Just know that knives are considered to be a deadly force weapon by the courts. It is always best to check with your state laws regarding carrying a knife.

Mace/Pepper Spray

When using this option for self-protection, you can be a little further away from your attacker, and it is not deadly. To mace or pepper spray someone is like saying you have already given them the warning to leave you alone, and you are now defending yourself in an attempt to getaway. This is a great diversion tool for you to escape from a harmful situation.

Taser/Defense Keychains

Although deploying a taser disables your attacker, it does not cause permanent damage. These do not require a license to carry but should be used responsibly as they are not toys. Another item for defense could be a keychain made specifically for defense. These come with sharp points and can be used against an attacker.

Handgun

Any responsible gun owner knows using it should be the last result, not the first. We use our firearms when we are in immediate fear of our lives. With that being said, other things may come into play “if” you ever have to use your gun. Were you the aggressor, was there a lesser force that could have been used, were you under the influence, was there an opportunity for you to avoid or escape the situation? All of these are important questions to think about.

No matter which option you choose for self-protection, do your research and train with that specific option. Always know where it is located and how to use it properly if you need to defend yourself in the event. We all have different situations, and what works for one does not work for all.
